Batman Beyond: The Search for an Asian American Voice

HOLLYWOOD — A handful of comic blogs have been pulsating with interesting chatter this first week of February 2019: Batman Beyond is apparently coming to the big screen as a theatrical release - apparently as a response to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The prospect of Batman Beyond as a theatrical film is exciting enough to comic fans, especially those who followed the animated series during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Adding to the chatter, however, is the prospect of Terry McGinnis, the series’ lead character, being voiced by an Asian American.

Stories published during the past few days of Batman Beyond‘s future on the big screen each cited Daniel Richtman, a “Twitter influencer” of SuperBroFilms and CNBC fame, as the source of the animated series coming to life - and searching for an Asian American to voice the lead character.

Richtman (@DanielRPK), on Jan. 30, retweeted a post by Thomas Polito (@thomasp0003). stating: “REPORT: Warner Bros. Developing Animated ‘Batman Beyond’ Movie For Theatrical Release.”

Richtman’s very next post read: “They're looking to cast Asian-American actor to voice Terry in the Batman Beyond animated movie!”

He followed his casting prediction with this tweet: "By the way I always kind of assumed while watching Batman Beyond as a kid that both Terry and his girlfriend were Asians."

Terry McGinnis is the Batman of the future, assuming the mantle of the Caped Crusader after Bruce Wayne retired.

Will Warner Bros. indeed bring Batman Beyond to the screen? And will Terry McGinnis be voiced by an Asian American actor, should the film actually be developed? Hopefully we’ll find out sooner than later. Stay tuned.
